- Installation of a cheaper system from an unknown manufacturer
- Equipment support should be assigned to one of the residents, who will be responsible for covering the costs in case of camera, recorder, hard drive, or other video server malfunctions
- Internet payment is assigned to one of the residents or providing the system with dedicated internet from a resident's apartment
- Cleaning the cameras from cobwebs and other maintenance tasks either involve paying a company or assigning a resident to handle them
- Using proprietary software. Limitation on simultaneous access to the recorder by multiple users
